Todays The Day!

Well todays the day for the contest! just comment and tell me your favorite sports player, what team he played for, and why you like him/her. Simple as that. Contest ends on Wednesday! remember you will recieve a bonus for mention this contest & blog on your own website/blog

69 comments:

  1. I'm not sure I have one FAVORITE player, but as a kid, I liked Rod Carew. He was a magician on the Twins when it came to basehits and bunts, and was an excellent baserunner, too. I learned to switch hit because of him.

  2. My favorite sports player of all time is Fred McGriff, world class 1B for such teams as the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Devil Rays, Cubs, and Dodgers.

As for why he's my favorite player...well originally it was part his presence on the Braves and part the Tom Emanski commercials. Over time, however, I favored McGriff over other players because he just always seemed so happy playing the game. As the late 90's proved, a lot of people can mash massive amounts of homeruns. Not everyone could do that with style and dignity and a smile on their face though, but Fred somehow always could. Simply a great dude.

I mentioned your contest on my blog as well: http://greatsportsnamehalloffame.blogspot.com/2010/07/coolio-cards-is-having-contest.html

  3. Will Clark SF Gaints...... Just loved the way he played the game and his swing.... He had the best swing out there....

  4. My favorite players always flux, but I'm going to go with my most recent: Curtis Granderson, formerly of the Detroit Tigers. To me he embodies everything that is right about a professional athlete. Hard working, well spoken, talented, friendly and just overall a good guy. I'd love to see him start having a little more success in New York.

Also, I've given a shout out to your contest. Thanks for hosting!

  5. My favorite sports player of all time would have to be Derek Jeter. The way Derek handles himself and the way he plays is just truly phenomenal. Well, he plays for the Yankees as most baseball fans should easily know, and he has the most hits of any one Yankee of all time. A plaque to the Hall of Fame is waiting for the 5 time World Series champion and Yankee captain when he finally hangs up his cleats. I like how he doesn't get into trouble like many of today's sports stars, and he always talks positive about everything.

Your contest is mentioned on my blog as well,

    Thanks for the great contest!

  6. My favorite player of all time is Frank Thomas a.k.a. The Big Hurt. He was freakishly good for the White Sox when I was a young boy. He will be a first ballot HOFer no doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  7. My favorite player was Barry Larkin (who not coincidentally played for my favorite team his entire career, the Reds). Larkin was one of the first players I can remember watching as a kid - and one of the key players in the Reds 1990 World Series victory over the A's (and last World Series appearance to date unfortunately)!

    ReplyDelete
  8. My favorite player of all time is Hunter Pence, of the Houston Astros. I like Hunter because when I went to spring training, I met him. He took pictures with me and stuff and he was so nice. He was my favorite from that moment, and I still like him because he seems like he has a lot of fun on the field

O, and advertised on my blog collectablecards.yolasite.com

    ReplyDelete
  9. My favorite players are Jim Thome and/or Omar Vizquel, if you couldn't tell from my blog. They both played for my favorite team, the Indians, and were instrumental in the playoff teams of the 90's.

They should both be good candidates for the HOF, and they were both class acts.

  10. Did my comment entry post? And I saw you need a number from the past posts, number 9 is it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Favorite baseball player is Kirk Gibson.

I remember him always going all out in whatever he did, usually getting injured in the process. Early in his career Sparky Anderson compared him to Mickey Mantle, a certain kiss of death. But he did give fans some great moments, homering in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Yankees one Sunday afternoon in 81, the 84 World Series, and one of the greatest home runs in World Series history.

Yes, he was always injured and that seemed to sap his potential, but he was loved. I remember in 85 when he was having problems finding a team in free agency (when the owners were found guilty of collusion) the guys at my dad's job would order Domino's every night saying that they were doing their part to help pay his salary.

  12. My favorite player of all time is Michael Jack Schmidt. He played his whole career in one of the toughest markets, Philadelphia, and helped redefine the third base position. He had an amazing swing, and was humble, never showboating.

  13. My favorite sports player is Ron Santo. He played the game hard, loves the game and the Cubs and is also a great guy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. My favorite player was Spike Owen, especially when he played for Seattle in the mid-80s. He sucked up grounders at short and got a number of key hits throughout the year. They traded him to the Red Sox in 1986, but I followed him for several years after. (He went on to set the record for most consecutive games at shortstop without committing an error, which has since been broken.)

    ReplyDelete
  15. My favorite player was Tim Flannery of the Padres. He is just two weeks younger than I am, he is a surfer (see 88 Fleer) and is a great guy, whom I have gotten to meet a few times.

    ReplyDelete
  16. My favorite player is Adrian Peterson who played college ball at the Univ. of Oklahoma. He currently plays for the Vikings. Every time he touches the ball he's fun to watch.

This is where I mentioned your contest.

    Thanks for having the contest.

  17. My favorite player has to be Bobby Doerr, 2nd baseman for the Boston Red Sox from 1937-1951.

Spending his entire career with the Sox, Doerr is one of the lesser known Sox greats. Never putting up amazing numbers, he often gets lost in the shadow of Ted Williams. However, Doerr was nothing but consistent, putting up solid numbers during his 14 year career all with the Sox. Always concerned more about the team than himself, Doerr was a class act loyal to the Boston Red Sox. Although his statistics and on field performances are somewhat lost in Sox history, his attitude and personality still remain part of Sox legend.

One of the classiest acts in Red Sox history.

  18. sticking with the baseball theme, it has to be Chipper Jones.
Since a rookie, he's played the game with respect, always striving to do better. Through the steroid era, he remained clean, and still excelled.
It's been a pleasure watching a future Hall of Famer his entire career.

  20. My favorite player has always been Keith Hernandez of the New York Mets. I've liked him since as long as I can remember. I think I like him because I like players who excel both defensively and offensively. I also like him because he plays the game the right way, gives 110% at all times and expects the same from his teammates.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My favorite player was Harold Baines. He played for the White Sox, A's, Rangers, Orioles and Indians in his long career. He always presented himself as a class act, who played the game right and kept out of trouble. He succeeded despite being a shy individual, which endeared him to me even more.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I mentioned the contest on my blog.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'll go with #55, Orel Hershiser. He played for the Dodgers, Indians, Giants, Mets and then back to LA to finish his career as a Dodger. I like him because in the late 1980s, when there was a fair amount of grandstanding and chest puffing, he seemed to be one of the quiet ones, letting his stuff on the mound speak for itself.

He was exciting to watch and new the game and his opponents well. Sun Tzu would have been proud.

  24. My favorite player of all time is Darryl Strawberry. I started following him as a Met but he has also played for the Dodges, Giants (albeit briefly) and Yankees. I was five years old when I declared him my favorite player, and the only reason I can think of as to why was because of his last name! "Strawberry". Not coincidentally, at the time they were my favorite fruit!

    ReplyDelete
  25. My favorite player is Hall of Famer Billy Williams. He spent 16 seasons with the Cubs and his final two with the A's. He's my favorite because of the way he played the game. He was tough (1117 consecutive games), consistent, yet humble, never seeking the spotlight.

    And thanks for the contest!

    ReplyDelete
  26. My favourite player of all time is Tony Fernandez of the Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians & very briefly the Milwaukee Brewers.

I liked Tony because of his quiet, reserved personality but also because of the style & grace that he displayed on the field. I spent countless hours trying to emulate his fielding prowess at my parents house growing up.

I mentioned your contest in my blog:

    Thanks for the contest.

  27. Donny Baseball - #23 - NY Yankees - my fave and the favorite of every other 9 year old boy in northern New Jersey growing up in the late 80's/early 90's. I think it was a combination of that sweet lefty stroke and bad ass Tom Selleck moustache. Even as his skills diminished and Tino Martinez had to come in and right the ship, he was still the guy you rooted for to get that big knock. I got to meet him up on the Cape a few years back before he got his gig with LA - he was hocking his new line of wood bats and teaching hitting tips to me and some teammates in the Cape League, and while everybody else was taking in the lessons of the day, I was grinning like an idiot and having a fanboy meltdown as Don Mattingly was trying to teach me how to hit a baseball. Hate on the Yankees all you want, but like Derek Jeter, Mattingly is a guy you can universally respect as both a ball player and ambassador of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals was always my favorite. I just thought he was exciting to watch when I was growing up.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Dwight Evans - Red Sox - Clutch hitter who seemed to always come through when I was watching the Sox as a kid. He also had a cannon for an arm and mastered a very difficult right field at Fenway.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Edgardo Alfonzo - Mets - He was defensively great at both third and second base, was a line drive hitter, and always seemed to get the clutch hit or make the clutch play. He was a joy to watch.

  32. Cal Ripken Jr. I always wanted to play ball like him as a kid and 2630 consecutive games is ridiculous. I never had to worry that my favorite player wouldn't be in the game when I was lucky enough to get to a game. He also signed autographs for everyone.

I also linked to your contest on my blog. http://greatoriolesautographproject.blogspot.com/2010/07/coolio-contest.html

  33. Favorite ballplayer of all-time is Ron Cey, "the Penguin." He played for the Dodgers, Cubs and A's, but is a Dodger forever as far as I'm concerned. Cey was consistent, powerful, knew the game, and never drew attention to himself. He did this all even though he may not have been the most athletic-looking player. In retirement, he is kind, thoughtful, respectful of fans and continues to be proud to be a part of Dodger history. Can't ask for more in a baseball player.

    ReplyDelete
  34. My favorite Baseball player is Cal Ripken Jr. IMO he played the game fairly and at 100% always. He was good to the fans and gave a lot of time signing autos after games. He has held on to the integrety of the game in his minor league endeavors.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My favorite football player is Ray Lewis. He brings leadership, intergity, and the fire in the belly. He is a warrior on the field and a great person off the field. He is what baltimore is. I always grew up idolizing him and always wanted to be him. He is such a great player and was our super mvp.

I also mentioned you in my blog

    ReplyDelete
  36. Warrick Dunn...He's a Seminole, He's a Falcon, and a class act on and off the field. He is probably one of the most inspiring athletes of our time.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Chris Sabo, who came up with the Reds in 1988. That year, I conducted a telephone interview with him for a school project, and ever since then I have been a fan. I was in sixth grade at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. #31 Mike Piazza! A play hard every day, down to earth kind of guy who always had time for the fans. Also likes heavy metal and rock n roll like myself.

  39. My boyhood hero was Bill Freehan, the catcher for the Detroit Tigers. I saw my first Tiger game in 1967, and Bill Freehan became my boyhood hero. My batting stance in Little League, the way I crouched behind the plate as a catcher, it was all done the way Bill Freehan did it. If possible, I would always wear uniform #11, and to this day, Bill Freehan is my favorite baseball player of All-Time.

My blog has a section featuring his cards, of which I cherished every single time I found one of his cards in a pack, back in the day when the main objective of opening up a pack of cards was to cherish the contents based on team loyalty, and not on the almighty dollar.

It will my pleasure to inform all the great card collectors out there of this site...

  40. Coot Veal of the late '50s Detroit Tigers is my favorite, for collecting reasons. He has a cool name and was the first vintage card I acquired. All-time all-around favorite would be Cal Ripken Jr. He went to work every day, worked hard, and was great at his job. Have to love the Iron Man.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was a big fan of Alan Trammell, and his double play partner, Loe Whitaker. The Detroit Tigers duo has the distinction of playing the most games together and most double plays turned. there should be a place for those guys in Cooperstown.
Adding a mention on my blog, sewingmachineguy.blogspot.com.
    Peace. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox who was later sold to the New York Yankees followed by a short stint with the Boston Braves is my favorite for his pitching skills as well as home run hitting abilities!

    ReplyDelete
  43. My favorite player is Richie Zisk. That's right -- RICHIE ZISK. Why? Because in 1977 he played for the Chicago White Sox and, as part of the legendary South Side Hitmen team, turned me into a lifelong White Sox fan by hitting out 30 homers (a big number back then) and knocking in 101 RBIs during that crazy summer. My heart pounded every time he stepped into the box, as I waited for the next towering home run shot and all the cheering and fireworks and choruses of "Na Na Hey Hey" that followed them back then. He was a starter on the All-Star team that year, and I couldn't have felt prouder as he ran onto the field in that distinctive black-and-white softball-style uniform, even if it was my own Dad out there. There have been plenty of better baseball players before and since, including many White Sox players, but none of them will affect me the way Richie Zisk did back when I was a wide-eyed 7-year-old just discovering the magic of the game of baseball.

  44. This is an all Ellsbury household right down to my little JD himself. Jacoby plays for the Boston Red Sox, although we certainly have not seen much of him this year. We like Jacoby because he is our local hero and was a major factor in the Sox winning it all in 2007.

    ReplyDelete
  45. My favorite player was Mike Piazza of the Mets, not of the Dodgers, and certainly not of the Marlins, Padres, or A's. Growing up, I was subjected to watching the awful Mets of the early-mid 90's. Mike added instant credibility to the Mets. He made them contenders, led them to the World Series, and was the heart and soul of the team for 7.5 seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  46. gotta go with Jack Morris, pitcher of the Tigers in the 1980's ( no hitter in '84)....ace for the World Series winners in 1984...gave 120% every time he went out on the mound

    ReplyDelete
  47. Steve Pearce of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Any ballplayer that walks from his apartment to the stadium for home games is a champ in my book. Not to mention a guy that is great with the fans

    ReplyDelete
  48. Griffey is my all time favorite player. I started collecting baseball cards in 1988. Living in Phoenix, AZ at the time we had no professional team, so I decided one day in 1990 that I needed to pick a favorite player. I narrowed it down to Griffey, then of the Mariners and Robin Ventura, then of the White Sox. I ended up picking Griffey. While Ventura had a solid career, I'm happy that I picked Griffey. Junior never disappointed me, even with all the injuries. Now I can talk about what could have been. He played stellar defense in centerfield and had the prettiest swing in all of baseball. I was sad to see him retire but am looking forward to his Hall of Fame induction 5 years from now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My favorite player is Mel Parnell, who pitched for the Red Sox from 1947-56. He's my favorite player because 1) he's from New Orleans like me, 2) we shared the same dentist, and 3) I met him in said dentist's office when I was about 6 years old and instantly became a lifelong Sox fan! Mr. Parnell was very cool and would often leave cards and notes for me at the dentist's office.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Derek Jeter - Yankees
I was born in '95, and been a Yankees fan through and through. Seeing the Yanks win and win in the 90s and now 2000s has been great, and who's always been there to lead them? One of the all time greats.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Eric Davis. He is known for being a Red. He spent time with the O's, Tigers, Cardinals, and Dodgers.

I like him because he was an all around talent. He should have been the first 40/40 guy but he could never play more than 13 games because of injuries. He even came back from cancer and had a great season with the orioles.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My favorite is Felix Pie because he's got great tools and he works hard to keep them sharp. He's not a star, but his work ethic is impeccable. He came back from his back injury much sooner than anyone expected because of that.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Favorite player is Mike Scioscia Dodgers as a player & Angels as a Manager. My second cousin have love family!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Favorite player is Miguel Cabrera who currently plays for the Detroit Tigers. I like him because he has overcome his alcoholism and made a huge impact for the Tigers this year.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My favorite is Brian Roberts of the Orioles. Despite being one of the smallest players in MLB, he is one of the best doubles hitters and is also a stolen base threat. He's the longest tenured current Oriole and is still climbing the team's historical leaderboards. Additionally, he is active with charities in the Baltimore community.

I hope I got this in on time! I'll also give you a mention on my Orioles card o the day blog.

    ReplyDelete
  56. My favorite has always been Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals. I liked that he was (and is) admired for something few other players get attention for -his glovework.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My favorite plahyers is Ken Griffey Jr. of the Seattle Mariners, Reds and White Sox. His combination of power at the plate and grace in the field was truly something to behold. Thanks for putting this contest on!

    ReplyDelete
  58. My favorite player of all time is Cal Ripken Jr. The guy is just a class act. Everybody knows about his one field heroics. The Streak, 3000 hits, 400 HRs..etc... Off the field is where his contributions to the public really stick out to me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My favorite player is Mark McGwire. As a kid i loved watching his tape measure shots and learned to play a little better first base trying to copy him. His "Bash Brothers" poster hung on my wall and tried in every way to get all of his cards (which i still have). Glad to see he has gotten back into the game.

    ReplyDelete
  60. steve garvey. dodgers. because the hype machine was such that any 7 year old kid in southern california in 1977 wanted to be steve garvey.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Ralph Kiner, One of the greatest hitters of the game. Not only was he a great player but also a great friend. I've been a friend of Ralph for over 35 years! If Ralph continued his career he probably would've had the homerun title.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Roy Halladay. He's one of the hardest working players in sports and is also one of the best. Don't mind watching A-Rod or Swisher either.

    Verification word: fartche.

    ReplyDelete
  63. My favorite player of all time? Tom Browning. He won 20 games for my hometown team and he was a left-hander, just like me. When you're ten years old, that counts for a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  64. My favorite player has been and always will be Pete Rose.

I learned to hustle to first EVERY TIME watching Pete Rose.

I learned giving 100% is THE LEAST you should expect of yourself from Pete Rose.

I learned if you truly are outstanding at what it is you do it is not bragging or arrogant to say so, from Pete Rose.

I also learned that even heroes are, in the end, human, from Pete Rose.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I gave your contest a mention at the end of this post:

  66. Yadier Molina. St. Louis Cardinals.

    1. Catcher is my favorite position.
    2. You don't run on Yadi. And if you do, you're prone to embarrassment.

    ReplyDelete
  67. My favorite payer ever is Bill Bates of the Dallas Cowboys. He was always too small and too slow, yet he always made the team. He was a great special teams player, a great nickel back, and a great role model. Ken Singleton gets honorable mention.

  69. My all-time favorite player is Frank Thomas, most notably of the Chicago White Sox, though he also played for the Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays.

The Big Hurt is my favorite for a number of reasons. I started coming into my own as a baseball fan in 1991, just as Frank was coming into his own as a major league player. The timing was perfect. He was the best hitter I had ever seen, and to this day is the best right handed hitter I've ever seen.

The other big reason is his fan-friendliness. I started getting autographs during that 1991 season, and Frank was a great signer, as good as any other star player. Those Sox teams in general were very fan-friendly, which is the entire reason I'm a Sox fan to this day!

In fact, I am pictured on a Frank Thomas baseball card. His 1995 Score card shows him signing autographs during batting practice of a road game against the Angels. I'm the guy in the green hat getting his autograph. It was close to 100 degrees that day (it was a day game), and Frank spent a good 15 minutes signing autographs, with sweat dripping from his face the entire time. That epitomizes Frank's fan-friendliness to me, and I have a constant reminder of what a great guy he is!
